Six days on the coast, with the walking that makes it more than a boat trip.

Positano as a base, Capri as a day, and — the part most people skip — the Path of the Gods, which runs the ridge above the whole coast and answers the question of what the Amalfi looks like from anywhere other than sea level. Pompeii bookends it on the way back to Naples.

- Day 1
Down the coast
Naples to Positano, and nothing more ambitious than dinner.
17:00Spiaggia Grande
The view back up at the town is the one on every postcard, and it is best from the water's edge at six.
- Day 2
The Path of the Gods
Bus up to Bomerano, walk the ridge, descend into Nocelle.
08:30Sentiero degli Dei
Five hundred metres above the sea for two hours, with Capri sitting off the end of the peninsula throughout.
Walk it east to west, Bomerano to Nocelle, so the coast is ahead of you and the descent is at the end. About 7 km, mostly downhill, and exposed the whole way.
13:00Nocelle steps
The last descent into Positano, and lunch at the bottom of it.
About 1,700 steps down. The Nocelle bus is a legitimate alternative and nobody will know.
- Day 3
Capri
First ferry across, last ferry back.
10:00Villa San Michele
Axel Munthe's house at the top of the Phoenician steps, and the best terrace on the island.
12:00Monte Solaro chairlift
The whole bay of Naples from 589 m, for the price of a coffee.
Twelve minutes each way in a single-seat chair, running from 09:30.
15:30Giardini di Augusto
Looks straight down on the Faraglioni and the switchbacks of Via Krupp.
- Day 4
Amalfi and Ravello
The town the coast is named after, then the terrace above it.
09:30Duomo di Amalfi
Sixty-two steps up from the square, and an Arab-Norman cloister most visitors walk straight past.
12:00Villa Cimbrone
The Terrace of Infinity — 350 m straight above the sea, with nothing in the way.
The bus up from Amalfi takes 25 minutes, and the road is not one to drive yourself.
- Day 5
A day off
Boat, lunch, and no schedule.
10:00Li Galli islands by boat
The coast reads completely differently from the water, and the swimming is better.
Hire from the jetty in Positano; a gozzo with a skipper is the standard arrangement.
- Day 6
Pompeii, then Naples
Three hours in the excavation on the way to the airport.
09:00Pompeii Archaeological Park
Directly on the road to Naples, and it is a city rather than a ruin.
Enter at Porta Marina rather than Piazza Anfiteatro if you only have a morning. There is almost no shade.
