Maldives Atoll Week
Six days on one atoll, arranged around the manta and whale shark seasons rather than the pool.

A Maldives week is usually a resort with a flight attached, which is a defensible way to spend it and also the reason most people come home having seen nothing but their own villa. This is built the other way round: one atoll, one move between a resort island and a local island, and the days scheduled against the actual marine calendar. Hanifaru Bay in Baa only opens to snorkellers between May and November and only on the right tide; the whale sharks in South Ari are year-round. Everything else here is arranged to leave those two fixed.
Day by day
- Day 1
Male, then north
Most people transit the capital without seeing it. It takes two hours and it is worth them.
10:00Hukuru Miskiy, the Old Friday Mosque
Built in 1658 from cut coral stone, carved rather than moulded, with a Quranic frieze cut into the walls and a lacquered interior.
Permission is needed to enter and shoulders and knees must be covered. Not open during prayers.
11:30Male fish market
The tuna arrives whole and is cut on the floor; it is the one place where the country's actual economy is visible.
Busiest in the afternoon when the pole-and-line boats come in.
14:00Seaplane to Baa Atoll
Thirty minutes at 300 metres over the atolls, which is the only way to actually see the geography you have come for.
Seaplanes fly VFR in daylight only, so a late arrival into Male means a night in the capital. Strict baggage limits.
- Day 2
The house reef
A deliberately unstructured day, because the reef outside your room is the thing you are paying for.
09:00House reef drift
A Maldivian house reef is a wall dropping from two metres to thirty within a few strokes, with the whole fish community stacked against it.
Check the current direction before entering and swim into it first. Reef-safe sunscreen only.
16:00Sandbank at low tide
A bar of white sand with no land in any direction, which is as close as the country gets to a defining image of itself.
Sandbanks appear and vanish with the tide, so the timing is fixed by the moon rather than by preference.
- Day 3
Hanifaru Bay
The reason to be in Baa Atoll, and a trip that can only be booked at short notice.
08:00Hanifaru Bay
When the current traps plankton in the bay, hundreds of reef mantas and sometimes whale sharks feed in a few metres of water: the largest known manta aggregation on earth.
Snorkelling only, no diving, no touching, capped numbers and a licensed ranger on every boat. Season is roughly May to November and depends on the lunar tide and the plankton.
15:00Dharavandhoo village
The island the domestic flights land on, and the easiest place in Baa to see what an ordinary Maldivian village looks like.
An inhabited island: cover shoulders and knees away from the designated bikini beach, and do not bring alcohol ashore.
- Day 4
South to Ari
Back through Male and down to a local island, which is a completely different country.
16:00Dhigurah sandbank
A two-kilometre sand spit running off the southern tip, with the reef on one side and open ocean on the other.
The island is three kilometres long and about 300 metres wide. The bikini beach is at the southern end; elsewhere, dress modestly.

Whale sharks
South Ari holds the only year-round aggregation in the country, and it is off this reef.
07:30South Ari Marine Protected Area
A resident juvenile population feeding along a 42-kilometre stretch of reef edge, which is why the research programme is based here rather than anywhere else.
Stay three metres from the body and four from the tail, never block its path, and no flash. The code of conduct exists because the animals here are scarred by boat strikes.
17:30Sunset fishing with the island boats
Pole-and-line is still how this country fishes, and going out on a dhoni at dusk is the closest a visitor gets to it.
Hand lines, no rods. The guesthouse will cook whatever you catch.

Reef and out
A last dive or drift, then the speedboat and the flight.
07:00Kudarah Thila
A submerged pinnacle covered in soft coral with grey reef sharks and jacks working the current around it, and one of the best-known dives in the country.
A protected site with strong current; suitable for experienced divers, and there is a shallower alternative for snorkellers.
13:00Speedboat transfer to Male
The last of the atolls at sea level rather than from the air, and the only honest way to feel how far apart these islands actually are.
Around ninety minutes from South Ari, and rough in the southwest monsoon. Leave a wide margin.
