Masai Mara and the Rift
Up the Rift by road, into the Mara Triangle by air — the quieter half of the reserve.

The Mara is one conservancy area with two completely different economies on it: the national reserve, where any vehicle can go and thirty of them will be at the same lion, and the private conservancies around it, where vehicle numbers are capped by the lease and off-road and night drives are permitted. Splitting the week between them is the whole decision. The reserve is where the river crossings happen from about July to October; the conservancies are where you will actually be alone with something.

- Day 1
Karen, on the day you land
Three things worth doing in Nairobi, all within four miles of each other, all on the day you arrive.
11:00Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Nairobi Nursery
The orphaned elephants are hand-raised here before rewilding at Tsavo, and the keepers explain the poaching arithmetic behind every calf in front of you.
Open to the public for one hour a day, 11:00 to 12:00, by advance booking only — there is no walk-up.
13:30Karen Blixen Museum
The actual farmhouse at the foot of the Ngong Hills, kept as it was in 1931 — and the guides are frank about whose land the coffee farm was on.
15:30Giraffe Centre
A breeding programme for the endangered Rothschild's giraffe that has released more than five hundred back into Kenyan parks, not a petting zoo.
Last entry is well before the 17:00 close, and the afternoon feed is quieter than the school-group mornings.
- Day 2
Down the escarpment
Out of Nairobi before the traffic, down into the valley, and into a park you can walk in.
15:00Hell's Gate National Park
Red cliffs, two volcanic plugs and no predators to speak of, so you cover it on a bicycle among zebra and eland instead of through a windscreen.
One of only two Kenyan national parks where you may cycle and walk; bikes hire at Elsa Gate. The lower gorge closes on flash-flood warnings and people have died there.
- Day 3
Longonot and the lake
A hard climb at dawn while it is cool, and a boat at the other end of the day.
06:30Mount Longonot
You look down into a forested volcanic crater from the rim and out over the whole floor of the Rift, which is the geography the rest of this trip is happening inside.
3.1 km to the crater rim, then a 7.2 km loop around it — four to five hours in total, with badly eroded and steep sections on the rim path. Carry all your water.
16:30Lake Naivasha
A freshwater lake in a chain of soda ones, which is why the fish eagles here are so dense that guides call them in by whistle.
Hippo come out of the water from late afternoon — boats keep their distance for a reason, and so should you on the shore path after dark.
- Day 4
Nakuru
A full day in a fenced park that quietly became Kenya's rhino stronghold.
07:00Lake Nakuru National Park
The whole park is electric-fenced, which is why both black and white rhino are easier to find here in a morning than anywhere else in Kenya, along with the Rothschild's giraffe moved in from Soy.
The flamingo numbers collapse when the lake level rises and the algae die back — treat them as a bonus, not the reason to come.
- Day 5
Into the Triangle
The short flight west, and an afternoon drive to work out where the cats are.
16:00Mara Triangle
The western third of the reserve, hemmed by the Oloololo Escarpment and the Mara River, with a fraction of the vehicles and the same lion.
Run by the Mara Conservancy rather than the county: off-road driving is banned and rangers fine for it, so ask your driver to hold the track.

Dawn from the air, then the river
A balloon before sunrise, then a full day pushed east towards the crossing points.
06:00Balloon over the Mara
From 300 metres you finally see the migration as a shape rather than a queue of animals, and the drift over the river at first light is silent.
Launch is in the dark for a sunrise lift; flights are cancelled outright for wind and rebooked, so put this early in your Mara nights, not on the last one.
10:00Maasai Mara National Reserve
A full day with the vehicle is the only honest way to see a river crossing, and the eastern plains hold the cheetah that the Triangle's longer grass hides.
Take a packed lunch and stay out — herds can mill at a crossing point for six hours and then not cross at all.

Last drive
One more escarpment morning before the airstrip and the flight back to Wilson.

The Triangle's resident prides den under the escarpment and are almost always found on a dawn drive — the last morning is regularly the best one.
